He did his Bachelor's Degree with Honours in Chemistry before coming to the then Applied Chemistry Department of the University of Calcutta. After his Post Graduation in Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology from the Department of Applied Chemistry, University of Calcutta in 1963, he specialized in Industrial Engineering and HRD. He also undertook extensive training program on Man-power Planning and Management at the Manchester University, UK, in the early 80's. He was a practicing Industrial Engineer for 15 years and a member of the Indian Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIIE) for over 30 years, and was awarded Fellowship of the Institute in 1996. He was also awarded the coveted Lillian Gilbreth Award in 1999 by IIIE for his outstanding contribution to IE profession. He transitioned himself from technical jobs to taking over responsibilities that encompassed the fields of General Management, Human Resources, Labour Relations among others. Throughout his formative years, he never felt shy of taking up challenges and led teams to increased productivity and continued on a journey of knowledge for development with diligence. His profound learning and capacity to adapt, was put to test to the maximum when he came back to Kolkata in the mid-eighties as the Managing Director of the Bengal Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd. During last years of his career he took up the position of the Chairman and Managing Director of Lubrizol India Limited. This was a paradigm shift for him at the time when India was experiencing profound changes as consequences of economic reforms. As market structures changed and newer situations evolved, he steered this Indo-American joint venture to undisputed market leadership through a disinvestment process. During his tenure, LIL achieved an all-time best performance in production and sales, profit (1998-99), export sales (1994-95), obtained ISO-9002 (1995) and ISO-14001 Certification (1998) and commissioned the second manufacturing unit.
